Harriet Tubman
Mosaic with stained glass
62 x 42 cm
Harriet Tubman was born, enslaved, in 1822 but escaped, in 1849, to Philadelphia in the North of the USA. She then, amazingly, returned, to the South, 13 times to free 70 more family members and others who were enslaved. This was part of what was called the ‘underground railroad’ to free enslaved people.
In the US civil war she led an expedition of US troops to free 700 more enslaved people.
Later on in her life she supported the women’s suffrage movement.
